Most Muslims will celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr on Sunday, August 19
CAIRO – The majority of Muslims worldwide will celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr, which crowns the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, on Sunday, August 19.
Religious authorities in Saudi Arabia announced that the new moon of Shawwal, the 10th month of Islamic calendar, could not be sighted on Friday, August 17.
“Therefore, Saturday, August 18, will be the final day of Ramadan and Sunday, August 19, will be the first day of Shawwal.”
Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta (House of Fatwa) also announced that Sunday, August 19, will be the start of `Eid Al-Fitr.
`Eid Al-Fitr will also start Sunday, August 19, in Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain.
Jordan, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Palestine will also celebrate the start of the Muslim feast on Sunday, August 19.
Sunni Muslims in Lebanon will also celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr on Sunday, August 19.
`Eid Al-Fitr is one the two main Islamic religious festivals along with `Eid Al-Adha.
During `Eid days, families and friends exchange visits to express well wishes and children, wearing new clothes bought especially for `Eid, enjoy going out in parks and open fields.
Same Day Muslim minorities in the West will also celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr on Sunday, August 19.
Muslims in North America will celebrate the feast on Sunday, according to a statement by the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) and Islamic Society of North America (ISNA).
The European Council on Fatwa and Research has also announced that `Eid Al-Fitr will start on Sunday, August 19.
Muslims in Turkey will also celebrate the festival on Sunday.
Muslims in Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Albania and Slovenia will also celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr on Sunday, August 19.
Muslims in Bangladesh will celebrate the `Eid-Al-Fitr on Monday as the Shawal moon was not sighted on Saturday.
`Eid Al Fitr in Pakistan and India will also be celebrated on Monday.
Chinese Muslims in northwest China's Qinghai Province started `Eid celebrations on Saturday.
Other Muslim-populated regions, including Xinjiang and Ningxia, will celebrate the festival on Sunday.
Moon sighting have always been a controversial issue among Muslim countries, and even scholars seem at odds over the issue.
While one group of scholars sees that Muslims in other regions and countries are to follow the same moon sighting as long as these countries share one part of the night, another states that Muslims everywhere should abide by the lunar calendar of Saudi Arabia.
A third, however, disputes both views, arguing that the authority in charge of ascertaining the sighting of the moon in a given country announces the sighting of the new moon, then Muslims in the country should all abide by this. This usually causes confusion among Muslims, particularly in the West, on observing the dawn-to-dusk fasting and celebrating the `Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of fasting.

Melaka Set For 12.5 Million Tourist Arrivals This Year
MELAKA, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- Melaka registered 6.8 million tourist arrivals in the first six months of this year, up by 21.1 per cent over the corresponding period last year, and is on track to achieve 12.5 million arrivals for the whole year.
The state recorded 5.6 million tourist arrivals between January and June last year, said Abd Kadir Md Idris, general manager of the Tourism Promotion Division in the Melaka Chief Minister's Department.
"Melaka is on the right track to achieving 12.5 million tourist arrivals this year in conjunction with the 750th anniversary of Melaka," he told Bernama.
Abd Kadir said domestic tourists continued to be the highest, registering five million or 74.63 per cent of the total arrivals, compared to 1.8 million foreign arrivals or 25.37 per cent.
A majority of the foreign tourists are from China, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, contributing to 1.1 million tourist arrivals in all.
Abd Kadir said the rise in the number of tourists was the result of close cooperation between the Melaka state government and the various players in the tourism industry, ranging from hotel operators to trishaw riders.
He also said that the opening of the RM73 million Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex at the mouth of the Melaka River on Aug 1, would provide a major boost to drawing more tourists to Melaka.
The CIQ, which would be a major gateway to Dumai and Bengkalis in Indonesia, would further facilitate tourist travel, besides the Melaka international airport in Batu Berendam, he said.

How to Learn English
Activating Our Vocabulary
Activating our vocabulary while thinking and working on something. For example, if you are going to study English on topics that focuses on your best friends, take a moment to think about your best friends, how they look, what their characters are, etc. This exercise will help our brain warm-up to vocabulary that we are likely to use as we study English about this particular subject.
Activating Your Grammar
Activating our grammar by thinking about the general grammar area before we begin to study. For example, if we are going to study English grammar focusing on the past, stop to think about what we did last weekend, where we went, etc. to help activate what we already understand about using the past. As with activating vocabulary, we will help our brain bring up what it knows about the past simple in an easy way before we begin to focus on studying English grammar in detail.
Singing a Song
Before class begins, or before we sit down to study English sing a song in English to ourselves. Make sure to use a song that we understand and know very well. This short and fun exercise will help our brain focus on the English language in a relaxing manner. It's important to be relaxed when you study English! Singing a song also helps activate the creative side of our brain which can help us come up with more examples as our practice conversation or do some creative writing.
Typing a Short Paragraph in English
If we are going to study English at our desk, begin by typing a simple paragraph in English. We can type about our day, our hobbies, our friends, etc. Anything will do. Typing helps activating the kinetic part of our brain that helps improve learning through physical activity. I also recommend typing while we study our English grammar. This will help solidify our knowledge with movement.
A Thousand Words ...
As the saying goes in English: A picture is worth a thousand words. Help activate the creative side of our brain by trying to describe a photo or other image. We can combine use this also to activate our vocabulary by choosing a picture that has something to do with the subject we are going to study in English.
I hope these steps can help our English learning activity. The most important of all is to do and give it a try.
